Plenty of sites promise new DoorDash drivers a $1,000 sign-up bonus. The reality is a Guaranteed Earnings offer, and the fine print decides what it's worth. Using DoorDash's published terms and 2026 pay data from Solo (worksolo.com), the first AI assistant for gig drivers, here's what new Dashers can actually expect.
How the DoorDash Sign-Up Bonus Works
DoorDash's new-driver incentive is called Guaranteed Earnings. Each offer sets a dollar amount, a required number of deliveries, and a time window. Complete the deliveries in time, and if your earnings fall short of the guaranteed amount, DoorDash pays the difference. If you earn more on your own, you keep it all, but DoorDash adds nothing.
In other words, it's a floor, not a bonus. Offers go to select new Dashers in specific markets, and amounts vary by area.
Tips Don't Count Toward the Guarantee
This is the detail most guides miss:
Tips make up about half of DoorDash pay. Solo's data shows the average delivery pays $3.50 in base pay and $3.50 in tips. Only the base pay half moves you toward the guarantee, so top-ups are more likely than many new Dashers expect, and your tips stay yours on top.
Also note that canceled, unassigned, and undelivered orders don't count toward your delivery total. If you miss the count, you get no top-up.
What Your Offer Is Actually Worth
Divide the guaranteed amount by the required deliveries, then compare the result to DoorDash's $3.50 average base pay. Well above $3.50 means a likely top-up. Near or below it means the guarantee is insurance rather than extra pay.
DoorDash Pay by City
Offers are set market by market, and so is regular pay. Here's what DoorDash drivers average per on-trip hour, including tips:
Seattle leads at $17.42/hr, nearly $6 above the Bay Area. If you live in a lower-paying metro, a strong guarantee is worth more to you. For pay data by platform and city, see Solo's Pay Insights.
What New Dashers Earn in Their First Month
On-trip hours exclude time spent waiting for orders, so your time online will be higher. Any Guaranteed Earnings top-up comes on top of these figures.
How to Hit Your Guarantee
- Do the math on day one. Divide the required deliveries by the days in your window to set a daily pace.
- Front-load your first week. An early buffer protects you from a sick day or slow weekend later on.
- Accept more orders while you're under the guarantee. Every completed delivery counts toward the total, and the top-up covers low base pay.
- Don't unassign orders. They don't count toward your delivery total.
Across all apps Solo tracks, dinner (6–8:30 PM) and late night (9:30 PM–12:30 AM) pay above average per on-trip hour. Busy windows also bring Peak Pay, which counts toward your guarantee.
Taxes on Your First Month
DoorDash doesn't withhold taxes, and your pay, tips, and any top-up are all taxable income. For 2026, the IRS mileage rate is 72.5¢ per mile for January through June and 76¢ per mile for July through December (IRS Announcement 2026-11). Solo's Mileage Tracker logs every mile automatically, and its Tax Hub estimates what you owe as you earn.
