Spark Driver pays well. In 2026, Spark drivers averaged $20.67 per hour on the job, which puts Spark third among major gig apps, according to Solo (worksolo.com), the earnings, mileage and tax app for gig workers. But Walmart doesn't withhold taxes, so a share of every delivery belongs to the IRS. The good news is that mileage, and possibly a new deduction for tips, can cut that bill substantially.
Here's what Spark drivers owe for 2026, how the 1099 rules changed, which deductions to claim, and the dates to put on your calendar. Download Solo to track your Spark earnings and miles automatically.
Do Spark drivers pay taxes?
Yes. Spark drivers are independent contractors, not Walmart employees. You pay two federal taxes on your profit:
- Self-employment tax: 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare), applied to 92.35% of your net earnings. It applies once you net $400 or more for the year.
- Federal income tax: charged at your normal bracket on your profit after deductions.
Your state may charge income tax too. Every one of these taxes is based on profit, so the deductions below directly lower what you owe.
What Spark drivers earn in 2026
Solo data shows Spark drivers averaged $20.67 per hour on the job from January through August 2026. That's down 13.1% from $23.79 in the same months of 2025, but Spark still out-earns Instacart, Shipt, DoorDash and Uber Eats.
The average Spark order paid $10.61 in base pay plus a $4.00 tip. Tips made up 28.6% of pay per order. That share matters because of a new tip deduction, covered below. For a deeper look at per-order pay, see how much a Walmart Spark driver makes per delivery.
Your Spark Driver 1099 for 2026
Spark reports your earnings on Form 1099-NEC. Starting with payments made in 2026, the reporting threshold rose from $600 to $2,000 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. If Spark paid you at least $2,000 in 2026, expect a 1099-NEC by February 1, 2027 (January 31 falls on a Sunday).
Look for your form in the Tax Documents section of your Spark Driver profile. If you didn't opt in to electronic delivery, it comes by mail. If you earned under $2,000, you won't get a form, but that income is still taxable.
Walmart's 1099-NEC reports your earnings and tips together as one total, so keep your own record of tips. You'll need it to claim the tip deduction below. Our guide to 1099 taxes for gig workers covers how to file.
The "no tax on tips" deduction for Spark drivers
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created a deduction of up to $25,000 a year for qualified tips, available for tax years 2025 through 2028. Goods delivery people are on the Treasury's list of qualifying occupations, which is good news for Spark drivers.
What to know before you count on it:
- Only voluntary tips count. Tips customers add by choice qualify; fees and service charges don't.
- It lowers income tax only. You still pay self-employment tax on your tips.
- It has limits. For self-employed workers, the deduction can't exceed your net profit from the work, and it phases out at higher incomes.
- The IRS is still finalizing the rules. Confirm your eligibility with a tax professional or your tax software.
Tracking your tips separately from base pay makes this deduction much easier to claim.
